Michelle Williams has often kept her private life away from the limelight, but recent events have pushed her into the forefront of a crucial battle—Hollywood’s gender pay gap. With a superhero movie on the horizon and a new husband by her side, Michelle is ready to embrace her next chapter, both professionally and personally.
As Ridley Scott and the cast of "All the Money in the World" were in the midst of nine days of re-shoots in Rome and London at the end of November, an article by The Washington Post highlighted the significant pay disparities among the cast. Specifically, it compared the salaries of Mark Wahlberg, the male lead, and Michelle Williams, his female co-star. The true extent of this disparity became apparent in early January when USA Today reported that Wahlberg, who had been named the highest-paid actor of the year by Forbes in August 2017 with annual earnings of $68 million, was paid $1.5 million for the reshoots. In stark contrast, Williams, who boasts an impressive career with four Oscar nominations, five Golden Globe nominations (including a win for "My Week with Marilyn" in 2012), and a Tony nomination, received an $80 per diem, amounting to less than $1,000 for the same additional filming.
This additional filming was necessary to re-create Kevin Spacey's scenes after the actor was accused of sexual misconduct and subsequently replaced with Christopher Plummer. Reflecting on this disparity, Williams shared, “It wouldn’t have occurred to me to ask for money for the re-shoots. I just wanted to do the right thing on his behalf,” referring to Anthony Rapp, the actor who accused Spacey of sexually assaulting him when he was 14 years old.
Michelle Williams's journey is one of resilience, integrity, and unwavering commitment to justice. Her decision to speak out against the gender pay gap in Hollywood has made her a pivotal figure in the fight for equality. Despite the challenges, she has never given up on love or her principles. Her recent wedding is a testament to her belief in love and partnership, while her public fight for equal pay highlights her dedication to fairness and transparency.
Photographed by Collier Schorr and styled by Samira Nasr for Vanity Fair, Williams embodies grace and strength. In the cover story, she is portrayed as a "Natural Woman," wearing a bodysuit by Louis Vuitton and a necklace by Tiffany & Co. The photograph captures not just her beauty, but also the essence of her character—a woman who stands tall in the face of adversity and continues to inspire those around her.
Michelle Williams is now poised for her next chapter, ready to take on new challenges in both her personal and professional life. Her story is a powerful reminder that the fight for equality is far from over and that every voice, every action, counts in making a difference.
